No one enjoys dry skin, but its a common experience if you live in temperate countries like Canada. Country Guide points out that roughly 70% of Canadians suffer from dry skin, especially during the harsh winter months. Exposure to cold and dry weather and the dry air from central heating in your home can cause your skin to become rough, itchy, and flaky.
Though dry skin is common among Canadians, you can use plenty of natural
remedies that can soothe and hydrate your skin. To keep your skin smooth and
healthy, here’s what you’ll need to do:
Make it a habit to moisturize your skin with shea butter
If you live where the air tends to be cold and dry, you’ll need to make it a daily habit to protect your skin with moisturizing products. These products need to be gentle and nourishing because harsh chemicals can irritate your skin and further increase its dryness.
Shea butter is essential for keeping your skin safe and hydrated. Unlike commercial lotions, pure African shea butter provides your skin with vitamins and fatty acids that can protect your skin’s natural oils. Shea butter also aids in your skin’s natural collagen production, so it can keep it soft, strong, and younger-looking over time.
Follow a balanced diet for your optimal health
Weight isn't something you usually consider when it comes to skin health. However, a study on ‘The Link Between Obesity and the Skin’ revealed that 60-70% of people with obesity experience skin changes, including skin dryness! The excess fat stored in one’s body can speed up transepidermal water loss, thus leading to more dryness.
Recognizing that excess weight can lead to skin dryness, you can improve your optimal health by following a balanced diet. Though there are plenty of diet options out there, Weight Watchers shows that personalized weight loss plans work best because they consider your food preferences, health goals, and even your coaching needs. Personalized diet plans make it easier to eat foods that can help you lose weight and moisturize your skin, such as oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
Use ingredient alternatives for unhealthy food
You can also keep your weight and your skin healthy by using healthy ingredient
alternatives for your guilty pleasures.
If you’re using shea butter for your skin, weight management specialist Malia Frey states that you can maximize it by using it as a replacement for fats and oils in various recipes. Smoothie lovers can use shea butter to give the drink a creamier texture and an added health boost. You can also use shea butter as an oil alternative for popular African dishes, such as the earthy and flavorful Dafaduka.
Increase your room’s humidity with a natural solution
You can’t change the climate, but you can find ways to improve the air quality within your home or office. Air conditioning and central heating can dry out your skin, so it’s best to balance the air quality by using a humidifying product. Rather than purchasing a new humidifier, you can opt to put containers of water near heat sources or purchase plants to improve the moisture levels in your environment. These natural solutions pull moisture back into the air, making it easier for your skin to retain its natural hydration levels despite the weather outside.
You can restore your skin's hydration levels with the help of natural remedies. These holistic solutions ensure that your skin won't be exposed to harsh ingredients or processes as you bring it back to its optimal health.
You all know I’m a fan of using coconut oil on my skin and hair, but another all-star moisturizer around our home is pure African Shea butter. Something about the name just sounds luxurious, doesn’t it?
Whether or not you have dry skin like me, you’ll love shea butter’s benefits. It can bring oily and combination skin types back into balance too. This luxurious Shea butter is very thick and solid at room temperature but has a buttery, rich consistency that makes it ideal to use as a natural lip balm, eye cream, or body butter.
Thanks to other unique properties, shea butter does more than moisturize and hydrate. It delivers vital health benefits like being anti-inflammatory and transporting anti-aging fatty acids right into the skin.
Many recommend it for sunburns or dark spots. It’s especially great for sensitive skin. There are so many shea butter benefits and uses!
So, what exactly is it?
What is Shea butter:
Shea butter is a fat produced from the seeds and kernels of the shea (Karite) tree. The Shea tree is native to West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Its butter has been used internally and externally for centuries across the continent to soothe the skin.
This ancient African remedy is off-white and solid at room temperature, but it doesn’t leave your skin too greasy. This skin superfood has been used in African remedy is off-white and solid at room temperature, but it doesn’t leave your skin too greasy. This skin superfood has been used in Africa and many other places for years to improve skin and hair. It also has a long history of medicinal use, such as in wound care and even treating leprosy.
While cocoa butter is hard at body temperature and coconut oil is liquid, Shea butter is in between them as it starts to melt at body temperature when you touch it. This unique quality makes it easier to handle, cut, and measure than other moisturizers.
Shea butter has been a huge benefit in cosmetic ingredients since the 14th century. It’s high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids combined with its easy-to-spread consistency — make it a great product for smoothing, soothing, and conditioning your skin. Shea tree butter has a strong, nutty, earthy, honey smell, likely from the cinnamic acid when you open the lid. Don’t worry, you won’t smell like Shea nuts for the rest of the day after using it.
I started using Shea butter in my daily routine just over a year ago and the difference I found in my skin has been incredible. A must try for those with or without dry skin!
What are the benefits of raw Shea butter?
1) Moisturizing
The concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids in shea butter makes it incredibly nourishing and moisturizing for the skin. It remedies dry skin and helps protect the skin’s natural oils.
2) Smooths Skin
Shea butter aids in natural collagen production and nourishes the skin to prevent drying. With long-term use, many people report skin softening and strengthening as well as wrinkle reduction.
3) Reduces inflammation
Due to its cinnamic acid and other natural properties, shea butter is anti-inflammatory. One compound lupeol cinnamate, reduces skin inflammation and even potentially helps prevent skin mutations. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it beneficial for acne.
4) Supplies Vitamins A and E
High in these nutrients, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties on the skin may also help with dermatitis and psoriasis.
5) Provides Essential Fatty Acids
What makes shea butter unique is the fatty acid profile. In addition to cinnamic acid, shea contains oleic, stearic, linoleic, palmitic, arachidic, and linolenic acid. Together, these make it the perfect boost for cellular energy and regeneration.
6) Reduces Joint Pain
A 2016 study found that it relieves the symptoms of osteoarthritis in rats and protects cartilage from destruction and degeneration.
7) Penetrates Skin
Many studies show that it is especially good at penetrating the skin and contains 60% fat, making it highly emollient (like how almond and jojoba oil polish the skin.) It’s high in essential fatty acids, which help build the skin barrier.
8) Reduces Stretch Marks
Another benefit of Shea butter is that it is tremendously effective in getting rid of stretch marks and wrinkles. This is because it acts as a moisturizer and has skin tightening properties. The vitamins and high iron content are effective in promoting skin elasticity, which is very helpful if you’re pregnant. It’s important to remember that shea butter is best used on exfoliated skin, so be sure to take a bath or warm shower before applying the butter for the best results. Be sure to apply a thin layer of the butter, as this will allow for quicker absorption. Note that you can apply the butter up to 4 times a day, although we generally recommend that you apply it once or twice a day.
9) How to use Shea butter
On our skin:
Shea butter can be applied directly to the skin. Raw, unrefined Shea butter is easy to spread.
On our hair:
Raw Shea butter can be applied directly to your hair. If you have curly hair like I do, I like to use it as a conditioner. Just make sure your hair has absorbed most of the shea butter before rinsing. You can also use a small amount of shea butter as a leave-in conditioner.
*If you have thin hair, I recommend applying shea butter only to the ends, this way your roots won’t look oily.
10) How to use Shea butter on your face
Shea butter can be applied directly to your face before you go to sleep. Applying shea butter as part of your skincare routine in the morning might take some getting used to, but the results will amaze you.
11) Improves Beards
Shea butter is incredibly good for your beard, and many consider products made with it to be the best beard products. It contains Vitamin A and Vitamin F which are essential to keeping your hair (facial and otherwise) conditioned and moisturized, without the addition of harmful chemicals that could dry out your beard. It also stimulates hair growth, which means you’ll be able to always keep a lengthy and healthy-looking beard. Lastly, the natural antioxidant content will keep your beard clean and smelling great all the time. Win, win, win.
12) Helps soothe Diaper Rash
Keep your baby’s skin feeling soft and moisturized, without slathering on a chemical-filled lotion. Shea butter is an effective, natural moisturizer that is gentle on the skin and suited for sensitive skin types. Not only can it be useful for a diaper rash, but it can also be applied post-bath to treat dry skin conditions as well.
13) Smooth Lips
Lip gloss or lipstick may already be part of your makeup routine, but what about shea butter? With its absorbable and moisturizing effects, shea butter serves as the ideal lip balm that’s needed in the cold, dry winter months. Shea butter creates a protective layer on the lips and helps lock the moisture in the skin.
14) Restores the Elasticity of The Skin
Shea butter also improves the production of collagen in the skin. Thus, its application restores the natural elasticity of the skin besides hydrating, softening, and beautifying it. Restored elasticity also ensures reduced wrinkles and blemishes.
15) Reduce Razor Irritation and Bumps
Shaving hair using razors can often leave your skin irritated and itchy. At times, it might even develop bumps post shaving as a result of the irritation. Shea butter can help reduce this as it moisturizes and soothes the irritated skin. You can also apply the butter a day prior to shaving to smoothen the skin and hair. This will make the shaving process easier and faster and doesn’t leave any irritated spots behind.
16) Repairs Damaged Hair
A number of chemical treatments like straighteners, perms, and curlers are responsible for stripping off the natural moisture from the hair. Shea butter can help restore this lost moisture. It also protects the hair from harsh weather conditions and the harmful free radicals in the air and water. Moreover, shea butter has a low SPF that is sufficient to protect the hair from sun damage caused due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It repairs the damage that has already been caused by the harsh weather and the sun. This is largely since once absorbed, shea butter coats the hair shaft so that it is protected from a heat tool, or any other damaging material being passed along the hair. This is particularly beneficial for processed or coloured hair. It also protects the hair against salt and chlorine when applied before swimming.
A little back story,
Shea Butter Market was inspired by the woman in her home community, in Northern Ghana. When she would go home, she asked the woman if they needed anything. They said they wanted to work. This sat heavily on Gifty’s heart, she knew she wanted to help but she wasn’t sure how. That’s when she came up with an idea to have the women make the Shea butter.
Gifty loves to work within the community, she has helped charities, one being the widows group. She is very passionate about helping women in her community and is always thinking of new projects that will help support woman and children.
Gifty started a project in Northern Ghana called “Girl Education project”. This project will help support girls to have an education and future for themselves. Since starting Shea Butter Market the woman of Ghana is able to have money in their pockets to help their children go to school, have medical care, buy school uniforms, and take control of their financial well-being.

So why a hippo? Barbi Marengo was born on the East Coast of South Africa, in Durban. One day Barbi was driving back from Kenten, her youngest son happened to be with her that day. When they saw a 3-ton hippo wondering up the road. Their son had carved a hippo years ago for a school project and came up with the idea to make a soap shaped like a hippo. He reminded her that she had a soap company in Africa, and she knew how to make soap. After they came to Canada, they were raising money for artists and the art community that they supported in Lacana, that could no longer export their products because of Covid. That’s the story on how the hippo became a soap.
Although their Hippo soaps were created to share kindness and love for a rural community in South Africa; this combo we have created is to spread awareness and share love while supporting CWAV Society in Cowichan Bay.
The Almond and Shea Butter cold pour soap is hand crafted by BEBA Botanica, and the ruby red heart is a decadent lotion bar, created by Shea Butter Market. A wonderful collaboration between two African ladies here on Vancouver Island- also PERFECT for Valentine’s Day.
Each hippo & heart is wrapped in Giraffe Skin inspired sheets of tissue paper and snuggled into an eco-friendly biodegradable mailer box, with a custom gift tag. For every two Valentines Gift Boxes you buy, (one for you and one for a friend) we will gift an additional gift box to CWAV for an island woman who really needs a little love this Valentine’s Day.
]]>Our skin is in constant need of moisture irrespective of the season. Be it humidity or nippy weather, our skin can get dehydrated easily and it’s crucial to feed it with some moisture and desire. We often tend to pay attention to our facial skin and unknowingly neglect our body’s skin. But, the skin on our body can also get extremely dry and dehydrated leading to white or dark patches, flaking and peeling skin and more.
Enter body lotions, a quick and one-stop solution to control dryness and infuse moisture into the epidermis. Market-bought body lotions are great but do you know that you can also craft a bespoke homemade body lotion for yourself? DIY skills are one that has definitely upgraded in the past few months and that brings us to the art of making your own homemade body lotion.
You also get the advantage of customizing your lotion by adding or subtracting ingredients that you prefer and can also play with the fragrance of it by mixing essential oils of your choice. All in all, a homemade body lotion is a great idea to give your skin some time off the market-bought ones and nourish it with the goodness of pure and skin-loving ingredients.
Here are a few homemade body lotion recipes that you can try out.
We all are aware of the benefits of cocoa butter and rose water for the skin. While the former is great to achieve smooth and deeply nourished skin, the latter is best to soothe and calm the skin, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and cooling properties. This homemade body lotion recipe is perfect for humid and sticky weather as it’s quick-absorbing as well as cooling.
Melt all your thick ingredients like beeswax, cocoa butter along with almond oil in a double boiler technique. A double boiler technique refers to placing a glass bowl on top of the other one which is exposed to direct flame and adding the product you wish to melt in the bowl above.
Once you see the ingredients behind to melt and mix, add vitamin E oil and take it off the flame in the next minute. Next, add rose water into a blender and as soon as you observe the water blending, slowly pour in the oil mixture. Once it emulsifies and blends, your creamy white homemade body lotion is ready.
Aloe vera is a blessing for your skin, you have to admit that. Its cooling and soothing properties are capable of taking care of most skin (and heat-caused) concerns under the roof. Grapeseed oil is another gem of an ingredient that offers a bunch of benefits to the skin.
Start by combining aloe vera, vitamin E oil and essential oil in a small bowl for them to come at room temperature and mix well. Next, combine the beeswax and grapeseed oil in a bowl and place them in a pan full of boiling water. Keep stirring to avoid lumps while boiling and take it off the pan once the wax has melted completely. Once it cools down, combine the wax and aloe vera mixtures into a blender and blend until your smooth homemade body lotion is formed.
If you are hesitant about using beeswax in your homemade body lotion, you can opt for this recipe. This one is loaded with nourishing oils and butter like coconut oil, shea butter and avocado oil that is perfect for extremely parched and dry skin. It’s great for the upcoming winters too. You can use any essential oil, or switch up the lavender one with cinnamon or ginger for that extra warmth.
Since there’s no beeswax here, the melting time reduces considerably. All the oils and butter have a quick melting tendency. So first, combine the coconut oil, avocado oil and shea butter in a container and place it on medium flame until they melt and liquify completely. Once that’s done, get that mixture off the flame and add 8 - 10 drops of any essential oil and give it a nice mix. Place it in the fridge until it solidifies a bit. Then add arrowroot powder and mix, your homemade body lotion is ready.
Honey is known for its skin-enriching properties. It’s great to soften the skin and add glow and radiance. In this homemade body lotion, you combine a few nourishing oils and butter with fragrant essential oils for a lotion that isn’t just moisturizing but also uplifts the mood.
Start by adding honey, coconut oil and shea butter to a container. Add vanilla extract and give it a quick mix. Next, let this mix begin to melt using the double boiler technique. Once everything is nicely mixed and blended, take it off the heat and place it aside to let it cool down and come to room temperature. Place this mix in a fridge to solidify. Once it’s converted in a solid state, add the frankincense essential oil and blend it with a hand blender. A soft, fluffy and whipped homemade body lotion is what you get.
Glycerin has been a part of moisturizing creams and lotions since forever. It’s a humectant that locks in the moisture of your skin. And coconut oil may not be the best option for your face but definitely gives your body a moisture rush without clogging the pores. If you want to create a no-heat and fuss-free homemade body lotion, this is the one for you.
Take a huge bowl and combine the two main ingredients- coconut oil and glycerin and give it a good mix. Next, add lemon essential oil drops and mix gently again. That’s it, your lotion is ready. It’s really that simple.
A. All the lotions with cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter and avocado oils are great for dry skin since they offer high-intensity nourishment.
Shea butter melts when you touch it because it has a low melting point due to the high levels of fatty acids (over 80%)
]]>It can make your hair grow and be healthy. You can use it to do many things with your hair, like make it shiny or make the ends of the hair silky.
Shea butter has been used in Africa for generations to moisturize skin and hair. This natural ingredient is also beneficial for hair growth, providing many essential nutrients needed by your hair's roots to grow healthy.
Over the past decade, shea butter has become popular in North America as a moisturizer. However, if you are looking for something that does more than prevent dryness, its use for hair growth makes it an important addition to any beauty regimen.
Shea butter melts when you touch it because it has a low melting point due to the high levels of fatty acids (over 80%)
(1). What kinds of fatty acids? Shea butter is especially high in oleic and stearic acids.
(2). Oleic acid will improve the softness of your hair, and stearic acid is a natural emollient that has anti-inflammatory properties. Shea's fatty acids help reduce dryness by penetrating the hair shaft.
But wait! There's more! Shea butter also contains essential vitamins like vitamin E which promotes circulation to promote healthy hair growth. Vitamin A is an antioxidant with antibacterial properties.
(3). It can even be used topically to fight infection from lice or ringworm.
(4). No wonder doctors recommend shea oil for psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions!
And it gets better: one of its ingredients is cinnamidopropyltrimonium chloride, which is an anti-static agent.
(5). Shea butter does not build up in your hair like other butters. It absorbs into the cortex of the hair to nourish it, making shea butter great for quality protein treatments.
Of course, when you're shopping for shea butter products, there are a few things to consider. First off, raw unrefined shea butter will be much more beneficial than processed or refined versions that do not contain all these nutrients and active ingredients. Additionally, if you live somewhere with hot weather year-round, opt for 100% pure unrefined shea butter because heat processing can destroy the fatty acids.
Our hair can hold up to 10% water. If it loses this, it becomes brittle and frizzy. Afro-textured hair is the most vulnerable because that kind of hair has tight curls. Shea butter may help with this problem because that also comes from plants, but there is evidence now that it can be effective at improving the moisture content in our hair.
This is because it has fatty acid. This helps prevent breakage and water loss. It also helps seal which makes the hair softer. Mostly for people with coarse or curly hair
Fatty acids are good for hair. They are natural moisturizers. Scientists wanted to see if Miracle Fruit oil could improve hair breakage in women of all ages.
In a study done by Dr. Sanusi Umar, MD, the oil was tested on a group of people. They found that their hair looked and felt better when they used it. Other types of oils can't do that because they don't go through the hair as this one does.
Shea butter has anti-inflammatory activity that can improve scalp conditions. It is also good for hair growth, providing many nutrients needed for healthy hair.
Actually, we can add other skin-related benefits. For example, shea butter might help with wounds or dandruff. But it is better to use shea butter for curly hair only if your scalp is oily and not itchy. Just put the butter on your hair and not your scalp if that's the case.
In the end, it is better to use shea butter for high porosity hair. Shea butter seals the raised cuticle. But you can also use it for low porosity hair if you focus on tips.
Did you know Shea Butter Market uses 100% pure, unrefined shea butter? We are committed to using ethical practices when sourcing our products.
At Shea Butter Market we recommend using Shea Butter on your hair about once a week as a deep conditioning treatment and also spot treat if your scalp is feeling dry or flaky.
Some women have reported applying shea butter to their scalps to regrow lost hair due to alopecia! Shea butter can be used as a leave-in conditioner and/or curl cream too.
Bet you didn't know this amazing ingredient was so versatile?!
Shea butter is amazing for your hair because it is a natural product that contains essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that are needed for healthy hair growth.
Shea butter can help to fight infection and keep your scalp healthy. This makes shea butter a great choice for those who are struggling with scalp issues such as dryness, flakiness, or even infection.

The people that are most often benefit from Shea Butter Market products are those who have sensitive skin. Many of our customers use Shea butter for Eczema which makes sense because Eczema is one of the most common skin diseases and is estimated to impact between 10-15% of Canadians. According to the National Eczema Association, more than 30 million people are affected by some form of dermatitis.
The Eczema Society of Canada reported that 87 per cent of Canadians with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis say their disease negatively impacts their daily lives.
We were compelled to create this article in order to shed some light on the main advantages of Shea butter when used to renew the skin and combat Eczema. Before we get into it, let's go through what Shea Butter is.
Shea butter is a fatty substance that comes from the karite tree which grows in Western and Central Africa. It's part of the fat that they extract from the nuts that grow on this tree.
There are many different types of shea butter products being sold on the market today. These types include raw shea butter, organic shea butter and unrefined shea butter.
Raw Shea Butter is made by removing the natural oils from the nut and then grinding it up into a paste. This type of product doesn't undergo any refining process to get rid of any animal fat, bacteria or other impurities. It's important to note that raw shea butter doesn't go through a process in which the natural oils are removed from the nut, leading to a very oily substance when applied to your skin.
Raw shea butter has many health benefits that other types don't have. One of the main benefits is that it contains niacin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, germanium and selenium.
Organic shea butter is made by going through a cleaning process and then adding in certified organic oils such as cupuacu and neem. These oils are added to the butter and then heated up enough to allow the different components to mix together. The finished product is all-natural and can be applied without worry about any type of harmful chemicals or preservatives.
Unrefined Shea Butter is pasteurized in order to remove any harmful bacteria.
Great For Eczema because it:
Unrefined Shea butter is the healing ingredient in many lotions and creams because it conditions dry, sensitive or eczema-afflicted skin. The benefits don't stop there: it's also a natural UV protectant (safeguarding against sunburn) and provides anti-inflammatory relief for irritated patches of skin.
When Shea butter is unrefined it enhances pigmentation to fight scars, making it beneficial to use on stretch marks as well. Regular usage lessens signs of age such as wrinkles and crow's feet while fighting other aging signs such as age spots, fine lines and sagging skin tissue. Simply massage a small amount over your face everyday for rapid results!
Shea butter offers many benefits such as reducing eczema, helps heal wounds and has anti-inflammatory properties. It also has anti-microbial properties and prevents UV rays from damaging your skin.
There are many ways that you can apply shea butter for Eczema. You can use it as a lotion or cream, or you can include in with other products in order to get the benefits of it.
Here is a quick step by step guide for applying shea butter for Eczema.
Shea Butter Products are great for Sensitive Skin because not only does it moisturize the skin, but it also acts as an anti-inflammatory cream. This product is perfect for those with eczema or any type of scaly, dry patches on their skin.
It is best to use Shea Butter Products in lotion or cream form. For those who have eczema, they should always use a shea butter cream or lotion every day to help heal the eczema and prevent further irritation.
