The Science of
Shea Butter
Why this ancient botanical has earned its place in modern skincare — and why how it's made matters more than you think.
What Is Shea Butter?
Shea butter is extracted from the fatty nut of Vitellaria paradoxa — the shea tree — a wild, slow-growing species native exclusively to sub-Saharan Africa. It cannot be commercially cultivated. Every shea nut in existence was produced by a wild tree.
The shea tree takes 10–15 years to bear its first fruit, reaches peak productivity after 20–30 years, and can live for over 200 years. The nuts have been hand-harvested, processed, and traded across West Africa for at least 2,000 years — referenced as far back as ancient Egypt, where shea was transported in clay pots for use in cosmetics and medicine.
Today, virtually all of the world's shea supply comes from a band of 21 countries across the African continent known as the "Shea Belt" — stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east.
The Shea Belt
Penetrating Every Layer of Your Skin
Unlike synthetic moisturizers that sit on the skin's surface, unrefined shea butter's unique fatty acid profile — particularly its high oleic acid content — allows it to penetrate past the epidermis into the dermis, where lasting repair and hydration actually occur.
Each bioactive compound acts at a different depth and on a different mechanism, creating a layered, full-spectrum effect that no single synthetic ingredient can replicate.
Inside Shea Butter
Each compound performs a specific, proven role. Here's what you're actually putting on your skin — and why it works.
An omega-9 fatty acid that closely mirrors the skin's own sebum. It penetrates into the dermis — not just the surface — delivering lasting moisture where it's needed most.
Repairs and reinforces the skin's lipid barrier — the protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. Critical for eczema-prone and compromised skin.
Unique compounds (lupeol, butyrospermol) clinically shown to reduce redness, swelling, and scar formation. These are the first bioactives destroyed by refining.
A natural retinol precursor that promotes healthy cell turnover and collagen support — without the harsh irritation of synthetic retinoids.
Neutralizes free radicals from UV exposure and pollution — the primary external driver of premature aging — while supporting tissue repair at the cellular level.
Natural UV-absorbing compounds that provide mild sun protection (SPF 3–6) along with documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Refined vs. Unrefined:
Why It Changes Everything
Most shea butter on commercial shelves has been refined — a high-heat industrial process that turns a rich, ivory-coloured, nutty-smelling butter into an odourless white cream. It looks cleaner. It is far less effective. Here's exactly what refining removes.
| Property | Refined Shea Butter | Unrefined Shea Butter |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Stark white — bleached to uniform appearance. | Ivory to pale yellow — natural carotenoids and vitamin A intact. |
| Scent | Odourless — deodorization strips natural volatile compounds. | Subtle smoky, nutty, earthy aroma — a sign of zero chemical processing. |
| Vitamins A & E | Largely destroyed by high-heat refining (>200°C). | Fully preserved — active antioxidant and cell-renewal benefits intact. |
| Triterpenes | Significantly reduced or eliminated in the deodorization step. | Fully intact — delivering proven anti-inflammatory and healing activity. |
| Cinnamic Acid | Largely eliminated during bleaching. | Preserved — contributing natural UV protection and antimicrobial activity. |
| Processing | Bleaching agents, hexane extraction, high-heat deodorization. | No chemicals. Traditional water extraction by hand at low temperature. |
| Efficacy | Primary function: moisturization only — fatty acids remain. | Full-spectrum: moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing. |
† Bioactive levels vary by origin and harvest season. SBM sources exclusively from Ghana's Upper West Region, which consistently produces shea with some of the highest documented triterpene concentrations on the continent.
Real Healing for Every Skin Type
Raw shea butter naturally understands your skin. Here is how its unique vitamins and plant compounds work to heal, protect, and soothe your toughest skin concerns.
Stopping Dryness at the Source
Chronic dryness happens when your skin’s protective outer layer weakens, allowing natural moisture to simply evaporate. Pure shea butter mechanically plugs those leaks.
- Oleic acid sinks deep into the skin to deliver heavy-duty hydration.
- Stearic acid acts like a breathable shield, locking moisture in and keeping harsh weather out.
- Because it mimics your skin's natural oils, it absorbs beautifully without leaving a sticky, greasy film.
Calming Eczema and Flare-ups
Conditions like eczema and psoriasis happen when the skin overreacts. Unrefined shea contains natural plant compounds that actively calm that angry response.
- Rich in natural anti-inflammatories that visibly reduce redness, swelling, and severe itching.
- Creates a clean, protective seal over cracked or broken skin to help it heal faster.
- Completely free from synthetic fragrances and hidden chemicals that so often trigger eczema flares.
Fading Fine Lines and Sun Damage
Daily exposure to the sun and pollution breaks down your skin's collagen. Shea butter is packed with antioxidants that fight back against the elements.
- Natural Vitamin A encourages healthy cell turnover, revealing a fresher glow without the harsh peeling of chemical retinols.
- Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals, protecting your existing collagen and keeping skin firm.
- Provides a mild, natural defense against the daily wear and tear of the weather.
Preventing Stretch Marks & Softening Scars
Whether from pregnancy, growth spurts, or minor injuries, stretched or traumatized skin needs intense elasticity to heal smoothly.
- Deeply lubricates the skin's layers, allowing it to stretch comfortably without microscopic tearing.
- Encourages the production of fresh collagen to help soften and flatten existing scar tissue over time.
- A trusted, entirely natural secret used by women globally during pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
Pure Enough for Newborn Skin
A baby’s skin barrier isn’t fully developed until they are a year old, meaning they absorb whatever you put on them much faster than adults do.
- One single, edible ingredient—meaning absolutely no hidden perfumes, parabens, or harsh preservatives.
- Instantly soothes and forms a gentle, breathable barrier against diaper rash and wetness.
- Safely moisturizes and loosens dry, flaky patches like cradle cap without irritating tender skin.
- Safe for nursing mothers to use for nipple care, even if trace amounts are ingested by the baby.
