Shea Butter Market was founded on the belief that business could produce meaningful value for people, communities, and a broad range of shareholders! Our products are made with Shea butter, sourced directly from women’s’ collectives in Gifty’s home in Northern Ghana.
So why a hippo? Barbi Marengo was born on the East Coast of South Africa, in Durban. One day Barbi was driving back from Kenten, her youngest son happened to be with her that day. When they saw a 3-ton hippo wondering up the road. Their son had carved a hippo years ago for a school project and came up with the idea to make a soap shaped like a hippo. He reminded her that she had a soap company in Africa, and she knew how to make soap. After they came to Canada, they were raising money for artists and the art community that they supported in Lacana, that could no longer export their products because of Covid. That’s the story on how the hippo became a soap.
Although their Hippo soaps were created to share kindness and love for a rural community in South Africa; this combo we have created is to spread awareness and share love while supporting CWAV Society in Cowichan Bay.
The Almond and Shea Butter cold pour soap is hand crafted by BEBA Botanica, and the ruby red heart is a decadent lotion bar, created by Shea Butter Market. A wonderful collaboration between two African ladies here on Vancouver Island- also PERFECT for Valentine’s Day.
Each hippo & heart is wrapped in Giraffe Skin inspired sheets of tissue paper and snuggled into an eco-friendly biodegradable mailer box, with a custom gift tag.
